Do I really need those expensive shoes, and designer clothes?

Property of New Line Cinema

Every time we turn on the television we seen to see some form of product placement.  This is especially noticeable when we look at shows and movies like HBO's " Sex and the City." In this romantic comedy- drama, so much of an emphasis is placed on fashion and labels.  The producers of the show have no problem putting in shameless plugs for high- end clothing, and shoe designers like Vivienne Westwood and Manolo Blahnic.  It as almost as if the "Sex and the City" franchise is a constant infomercial for these high end designers.  The woman in the movie and series are portrayed as having such a glamourous life. In particular the character Carrie Bradshaw.  She has a job that she loves, great friends, and a man that loves her.
The viewers of the franchise are overwhelmingly woman.  I have to ask these questions, Do some woman buy these designers goods because of this "Sex and the City" franchise?  Or do viewers of the franchise  feel that if they buy these products that they will be seen as more glamourous just like Carrie Bradshaw? Do designer clothes make the woman, or is it the personality that truly matters?  This franchise would truly want woman to believe the former!  Food for thought.
